Indigenous Wisdom for Climate Resilience: Climate Change Adaptation in Indo-Nepal Himalayas
Indigenous wisdom can improve scientific research and inform culturally aware conservation initiatives (Nepal, T. K. 2024). As climate change continues to affect all the aspects of human life, Indigenous wisdom gives useful insights for making climate resilience, drawing from centuries of sustainable practices and deep connections to the natural resources. Indigenous communities often rely on holistic approaches that honour ecosystems and biodiversity, integrating knowledge of local climates, seasons, and natural cycles. This wisdom emphasizes sustainable resource management, adaptive strategies, and community-based resilience. Sustainable innovations for economic enhancement of people or ecological improvement of the environment in which they live can only be introduced if there is a high degree of relevance to prevailing local cultural and production practices and traditions (Chettri, 2008). Indigenous wisdom may supplement contemporary research with creative strategies for improving adaptation and reducing consequences as climate change accelerate. By acknowledging and embracing indigenous ways, we can promote more culturally aware and successful climate action that benefits people and the environment.
The Focal themes of the present study are:
1. To explore indigenous wisdom for climate resilience in the Indo-Nepal Himalayan region
2. To explore the indigenous practices to adapt climate change in the face of changing climate patterns in the Indo-Nepal Himalayan region
The paper follows qualitative approach- content analysis, review analysis and document analyses of secondary data sources. Different sources will be research papers, articles through. different search engines like Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Sci-hub, Research Gate and Google Search and references will be managed by Zotero, different blogs available online, newspaper, different policy documents available online.
The findings would reveal that how indigenous wisdom plays a crucial role in adapting climate change and developing resilience towards climate change. The findings can be concluded as indigenous wisdom toward climate resilience is extensively rich and unique. Climate change adaptation measures employed by the community have significantly helped them to sustain their indigenous practices in many ways. (Mugambiwa, 2018). Local methods for managing animal diseases: Human and animal skin conditions were treated with the leaves of the Drek plant (Rana et.al. 2019). These practices are deeply interconnected with spiritual belief and social and cultural system. The study emphasizes the need of integrating indigenous wisdom with current climate change adaptation strategies to enhance the Indo Nepal Himalayas region’s ability to withstand climate change and develop resilience towards climate change.
