Economic Landscape and Challenges of Chhurpi Production Farmers
Since the historical era, animal husbandry has been vital to the substantial livelihood of the Himalayan communities, and dairy products have mainly played a crucial role in their economic transformation. In Nepal, farming is the backbone of the economy, and livestock is strongly emphasized in rural areas; which are essential sources of income and employment, particularly in underdeveloped regions where it supports the livelihoods of many families. Beyond providing employment, dairy farming positively impacts farmers’ lives by generating income, supporting nutritional needs, and fostering social connections within communities. These benefits are essential for sustainable dairy production and improving the economic well-being of rural farmers in Nepal. Therefore, the study focused on exploring the economic landscape and challenges of Chhurpi Production Farmers in the Himalayan community. Based on this broader concept, the study has analyzed the financial contribution and explored the hurdles faced in the Chhurpi production business. The study area was purposively selected Kalinchowk Rural Municipality -01, Dolakha, Nepal. The study followed an explorative and descriptive research design and, under this study, employed mixed methods to collect qualitative and quantitative data from respected Chhurpi production farmers. The quantitative data were collected through a census and snowball sampling to reach 22 farmers. In-depth interviews were also conducted to collect qualitative data. The SPSS application was applied to analyze quantitative data, and the results show a contribution to the economic transformation of Chhurpi. For example, 54.5 percent of farmers earn below 50000 thousand monthly, 36.4 percent have 50000 to 100000 lakh rupees monthly, and 9.1 percent of farmers have 100001 to 200000 lakh rupees monthly income from the Chhurpi production. Besides, the majority, 63.6 percent of respondents, experienced transportation challenges as their main issue, and 59.1 percent faced environmental challenges in unpredictable weather. Finally, Chhurpi production farmers have benefited from their businesses while facing the challenges of modern development and climate change. Therefore, the planning and policymakers can use the findings as evidence to sustain themselves, suggesting a proper plan for Chhurpi-related business development and promoting Himalayan farmers’ livelihood.
